Hello! It's been a long time. I am thinking about doing a few reviews, I have a couple of new first time orders.

Here is a preview of the Milked soap that I picked up in person today. Two facial bars, a body bar, and a down there bar.

Since my last post I have turned into a full blown ALS fan. I'm a bit concerned by how quickly I became infatuated. Recently ALS had a sale of her most affordable figurines ($18) in two different colors so I figured what the heck since they have resale value. After ordering I felt guilty that I was impulse buying but I'm glad I went for him.

I've decided this is not going to be the beginning of an obsessive need to buy a lot of these; collecting for the sake of collecting is not my thing. (Excluding soap!) I would get maybe one more sometime as a desk buddy.

That said I have been collecting the latest quarters with the state and national parks that started coming out five years ago, and own a cardboard coin map to put them in. Last year was the first year I got all five that were released since they really upped the mintage from prior years. (Woot!)

Do you have anything you currently or used to collect?
Last week I was curious what a former soapmaker was up to these days. Amanda Louise Spayd had an Etsy shop called Squeaky Queen with melt & pour soaps with a dark vibe that brings to mind Sugar & Spite but with brighter, punchy colors. On her Etsy page, she said she stopped making soap to focus on art but I wasn't aware of any specifics. I just found out she has been creating adorably odd creatures for the past few years. The dolls in her line are called Dust Bunnies.

The first time I tried HoG's butterbombs I thought they left my bathwater overly buttery, but I purchased a few more at the end of last year and they were better, not as buttery and fizzier. I got bombs in all of the essential oils available at the time -- Silver Fir, Lavender and Aged Patchouli, and the last two were really great. Lavender reminded me of lavender absolute, my favorite version of lavender; it is strong and rich without that medicinal note that turns some people off. The aged patchouli Britton found is also very deep and rich and both scents help me chill out and feel more grounded.

I picked up a jar of ground up butterbombs when Britton posted that she was clearing out some things for the new year. The listing was 8 oz for $8, a bargain of $1 per oz compared with the usual $2.50 per oz. When it arrived I was a little disappointed that it was a typo and the jar was 4 oz, so the discount was only 50 cents an oz. Anyway, I used about 3/4 of an oz this morning and my bath was well scented so I am tempted to purchase this again since I order so rarely these days.
Having just found my mailbox key to my old apartment after 7 months, I FINALLY picked up this soap from Deb E. that she kindly sent me from a giveaway she won in 2012! Thanks again Deb. Since this soap sat in an envelope with a fragrance oil soap for much of 2013 it has as much of the scent of the other soap as it does its own, but I really like that scent as well so I'm enjoying this. This is a great formula, it feels like a cross between Beguile because of its hardness and My Planet Earth with its moisturizing lather. This soap contains heavy cream, which I'm not sure I've had in a soap before.

One of my soap swapping friends sent me a sample of this and I love this fir blend with Siberian fir needle oil, Himalayan cedar, scotch pine, ho wood and lavender and the earthy colors. Tiggy has a knack for blending essential oils, I think her background in plants carries over to perfume blending. I'm also enjoying her Yule release's frankincense blend called Sixpence Pudding.

Grapefruit Haven is a blend of various grapefruit essential oils, probably white, pink and ruby grapefruit. If you're familiar with Blood Bathory by Solstice Scents this has the same bright, juicy scent. What I like about this the most is I only have to use a tablespoon or two of this to scent my whole bath tub. Many of Moona's blends with 100% essential oils are too lightly scented in my experience but that is not the case here.

I think I blogged about Ananda's limited inventory because she is going out of business but her store is still open and I believe she is not charging for shipping. This is a clear balm with a gold shimmer. She has a few purple tints that I am tempted to try; although dark in the tube they are supposed to be less dramatic-looking when applied.

Their website allows you to indicate how much you would like to try each snack and they send your highest ranked snacks with a possible seasonal snack. The first box is free, after which get snacks monthly or biweekly for $6 shipped if you want to continue. Below is a pic of the serving sizes which are usually somewhere near an ounce, which is normally sufficient to tide me over until dinner at work.
garden of england - dried apples, strawberries, and black currants
olive and rosemary bruschetta - mini tomato breadsticks, rosemary and garlic cashews and kalamata olive croutons
coco paradise - milk chocolate drops, coconut flakes and cranberries
korean chili rice crackers - spicy chilli rice crackers

The first two of these were excellent and had me curious if they are getting requests to sell their snacks in largers sizes. I have not tried the second two yet.
Most of the year I can get by without a regular regimen, but I've made a few adjustments in the morning recently, like not using soap on my face every day and using a lotion or cream after shaving. Since I started collecting lip balms about a year ago, I've been using one a few times a day to justify having all of them and have found some to be better than others at preventing and healing chapped lips. If you happen to be interested in trying something new or want something with a little more oomph, here is a list of ones that don't let me down this time of year.

For Strange Women

I picked these up from a perfume forum for $4 each although they sell for $7, which is more than I would spend, so I'm glad I stumbled on them. I received tubes in Pine Cone and Clove. Pine Cone had very little scent when I received it, but Clove was quite strong and lovely and has not suffered any fade over time. The formula in these balms is firm but becomes creamy during application. I'm not sure when I will order more but I would like to try Absinthe and Poison Ivy some day, which is described as a soothing, deep green flavor.

Ingredients: Beeswax, cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, shea butter, meadowfoam oil, essential oil, vitamin E, rosemary extract, stevia extract, mica

Mirasol Farm

If you're interested in a balm that is hard working but isn't shy on flavor, this is for you. These balms go on very smoothly with a medium to heavyweight feel, and the flavor strength is the best I've tried from any brand. I did a review on the Lip Balm Wrangler earlier this year, and since then I've also received tubes of mocha, pink grapefruit, and sweet patchouli. I hope to get around to trying every flavor down the road.

This is a brand I discovered when I was reading the Lip Balm Wrangler regularly and am so glad I did. I've been very happy with the quality of all of UHW's products. Although the LBW's writing style making me want to try many of the brands she reviews, I was intrigued by the owner's description of her lip balm -- she used a technical word for chapped lips and how her formula is meant to heal and prevent them. Since they were deeply discounted at the time I bought a couple, Lavenderaide and Cup of Joe. Later I ordered a few more, Mint Chocolate, Porch Party, and Orange Vanilla. All of her lip balms have undeodorized cocoa butter so they have a hint of chocolate in the background, which as a chocolate fan doesn't bother me. If I order again I would like to try Solstice Spice, a orange, cinnamon, clove and cardamom flavor.

Ingredients: organic shea butter, organic fair trade cocoa butter, organic coconut oil, organic olive oil, cold pressed castor oil, local undeodorized beeswax, cold pressed meadowfoam seed oil, non-GMO vitamin E, essential oils and CO2 extracts.

Ananda Beauty

This is my favorite lip balm formula right now. It is extremely smooth and creamy. Ananda mainly carries tints although some of them are flavored also. I just ordered this balm below, a golden iridescent tint, and a translucent red balm. Right now all balms are $6 and shipping is free because the owner is going on hiatus. Definitely check them out!
The "Get Real" line of lip balm is out of production so when I saw a pack of 4 on sale on a random website I snagged them. Because of the how many balms I have now I'm still on my first one, so if you are interested in trying this brand let me know and I'll send you one. :) The replacement for this line is called Lip Shit and comes in more unique flavors than the Get Real line. I just checked their website to see where it is carried, and apparently it is in a deli in the town where I work, as well as Urban Outfitters and a Barnes & Noble elsewhere. Hmm...an interesting assortment fitting for a quirky brand, lol.
At least twice a year Bodygoodies has a free shipping sale, usually around the beginning of the summer and the holidays. Since my last order was a year ago and there were many new things available, I decided to place an order even though my soap stash is still sizable. I'm glad I went for it because it turned out to be my favorite order so far. I ordered 4 soaps and a mystery bag. Below is most of what I ordered. Some of the soaps have had samples taken from them and are no longer full size (1, 2, and 4).

The first 4 I picked and the others were from the mystery bag or extras.

caribou crossing - unscented with a ground loofa bottom layer.

clay bar - I'm not sure what this is scented with but it smells manly, my guess is black pepper or frankincense.

bar none - unscented, this is the only one I haven't used yet.

lavender mint - I love the scent of this one and the swirls are pretty too. I've used about a 1/3 already.

metz road soap ball - Smells like a cinnamon pastry, this was the first one I used because it was rolled in brown granulated sugar and the sugar had melted into the paper around it.

room 42 - rose geranium, patchouli and cocoa

amyst - rosemary mint. I really like this one also but it has been retired.

samples of honey orange and beer soap

Between the mystery bag and the extras there were a lot of surprises. In the bag were (5) and (7) above, a serum sample, a laundry stick, and a low tide sample. (6) and (8) were extras everyone received with their order, and Heidi kindly included a tinted lip lotion I requested.

Below is the treatment serum sample and tinted lip lotion. I'm not a regular serum user so I expect this will last a long time. I've used it around my eyes a few times. The lip lotion goes on nicely and the tin is pretty big for a lip product. The tint is very light when applied.
For anyone thinking about trying bodygoodies, the lather on these soaps is why I buy them, it's hard to describe the difference but it's worth splurging on if you want to try something new. And if you already have a lot of soap, wait for the free shipping sales, which is usually $40 minimum. Both times I've ordered during these sales I've received an extra free bar.Jeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720810461114999061noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7963791400709285914.post-53700295254281718492013-07-10T18:00:00.003-07:002013-07-13T09:52:10.076-07:00Moonalisa summer order

I lucked out again - I received another person's order by accident but was notified of the mistake before it arrived. Like last time it doesn't bother me because there are so many scents I haven't tried.

Blueberry Hill - Delicious, warm blueberry syrup, butter and pancakes, slurp.... this one is a straight up fragrance that is so good on its own, I never had the heart to add a thing.

Bohemian Velvet - Sandalwood, Patchouli, and Nag Champa incense type of notes. Inspired from MoonaLisa's Haight Ashbury days as a Goth girl. It's like walking into one of those dark and exciting old pagan magic shops in the Haight, sadly which no longer exist The lovely incense type aromas are sure to bring back old memories or build new ones.

Blue Milk bubbling bath brew sample - no official description, it is a blueberry candy-type scent.

I opened these to sniff only without touching the roller balls. If anyone is interested in them, I was planning on putting these on a couple forums or eBay at a discount from Moona's shop.

I like both perfume scents, I'm not into the sweet scents as much as I used to be so I would prefer Blueberry Hill in a wash-off product. I've seen a few people rave about Bohemian Velvet and it is a really good scent, it smells like incense, I would like this as a home fragrance oil or a wax product. Sometimes I find burning incense too smoky, and this doesn't smell that way, more like incense before it is burned.

My order contained perfumes of some of the scents I got in my Easter basket - Don't Get Your Knickers in a Twist, Dr. Bombay, and Patchouli & Petitgrain. I wanted to get Lavender Absolute but figured I could buy a bottle online somewhere else and make my own version with a carrier oil.

If you ordered what are you looking forward to receiving?

First trip to California

For years I've been wanting to see California, and my wait will finally be over in the fall. Three months ago I saw a deal for round trip flights to LA or San Francisco from NJ. I'm more interested in seeing the coastline than spending time in either city so I bought tickets into SF and out of LA. Excitedly I went to the county library for interesting travel books...and then largely put off figuring out what I wanted to do and where to stay, the information on hotels, restaurants, parks and things to do was overwhelming. A couple weeks ago I realized I needed to get on the ball; some of the places I was hoping to stay were already booked. Even though I shouldn't have I started browsing at work, reading reviews, and made all of the reservations over a couple of days. The plan is to spend a couple of days in San Francisco, a few more in Monterey and Carmel, drive through Big Sur and then make one night stops to Santa Barbara and the airport.

The photos are what I'm looking forward to the most: local ice cream, sea lions, Big Sur, and sunsets over water. If anyone has restaurant recommendations please share!Jeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720810461114999061noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7963791400709285914.post-81385610410977003072013-04-21T11:39:00.003-07:002013-05-20T22:37:12.762-07:00Giveaway!Interested in trying some scents or vendors that you've never tried before? This week they are offering their nail polish for $4 and have set up a recycling program for unwanted polish. Since my recycling obsession is almost as strong as my soap obsession I might order some shades to support them.
Last week I received an Easter basket with various goodies from Moonalisa. I was excited to get this because the basket I ordered had a few citrus scents I had been wanting to try, the lemony Don't Get Your Knickers in a Twist and all grapefruit Grapefruit Haven, and I was finally one of the first to receive theirs because I didn't become indecisive making my order like in the past, which can be a difference of 2 or 3 weeks (although Moona has hired more staff and to her credit the turnaround time and product availability has noticeably improved). It arrived Friday, and as I picked it apart I noticed scents I was not expecting....it turned out there was a mix up, the basket was a different theme from the one I picked. Still smelled nice and looked cute of course.

The foil items are bath melts and solid sugar scrubs.

I sent Moona an email that night and when I was awoke in the middle of the night later, decided to leave a note on Facebook and instantly received a message back that she would send out another basket asap. This was about 1:45 AM her time, and on Monday the replacement came. So, all in all, it worked out and I got to try some scents I wouldn't have otherwise and it kinda felt like Christmas, so I can't complain.

There are a few things I will be giving away, if anyone is interested in them I'll send them either or both of the following, all I ask is funds for shipping, and I will wrap and send them with care in typical Moona fashion. Actual photos to come, here is one from Moona's bigcartel site.

I have a soap cupcake with a raspberry on top instead of a bird's nest, in Raspberry Lemon Tisane. It smells great inside the package, sweet and fruity with a very tart lemon edge. When I took it out, however, it is almost too strong, but maybe it will mellow over time. I wonder if this could be on purpose because of the size of her fans' collections, she knows things don't always get used right away, LOL! Anyway, I cut a thin slice off to sample, and the scent throw was a few feet. The rest of the cupcake in original packaging is available.

I also have a 4 oz. 4-in-1 gel, in Snozberry Fizzy Lifter, described as j<span data-ft="{"tn":"K"}" id=".reactRoot[54].[1][2][1]{comment10151235035201784_24771823}.0.[1].0.[1].0.[0].[0][2]">uicy red and purple berry blend with effervescence and a teeny touch of a secret floral , just a tad to give it enough freshness, but barely detectable. This smelled really familiar to me but I couldn't make the connection for a month or two, but eventually realized it reminds me of Herbal Essences shampoo.

Believe it or not, I've switched from taking showers to baths every day. It started when some of the tiles above my bathtub were coming lose, and taking a bath prevented them from getting worse, and then I figured I'd stick with it because I use less water taking baths.

In a prior post I mentioned Solstice Scents bath salts, and for Valentine's Day I ordered my first jars of Blood Bathory. The scent is a combination of essential oils of pink grapefruit, white grapefruit, palmarosa, geranium bourbon, peru balsam, roman chamomile, rosewood and jasmine with a few drops of jasmine fragrance oil. The top notes are the grapefruit and a hint of geranium. The grapefruit smells like a white grapefruit with the white pith around it, more tart than sweet like the ruby red variety (edit: I was reviewing a jar that was half-full so it had been exposed to air, silly me. When I opened a new jar, the sweeter pink grapefruit came through), and this is not a shy grapefruit. I don't know what a few of the rest of the notes smell like individually but there is a depth to this blend like Crumbling Crypt so I'm sure they're adding something. :) The name of the salts comes from the color added to them which turns your water a deep shade of red; here's some tub photos from another blog.

Like Crumbling Crypt, these are heavily scented...Angela doesn't skimp. The salts are offered seasonally which is why I have a bunch of jars. I think next season's release will have the last EO scent blend I'm aware of that I haven't tried, called Wren, described as primarily tart, citrusy, herbaceous and slightly woodsy.

I've been missing "soap chat" lately so I thought I'd check in and see what everyone is using these days.

Sink dish (usually all samples; how many samples can YOU cram on a soap dish?):

Get Lathered - Lime Lager Granola Bar soap
I love lime and I love beer (in soap), so together what more can I ask for. This soap has been in my basement for a couple months and I'm enjoying this now that I'm showing it some love!

Valhalla Soap Co - Norseman and Bergamot & Tarragon soaps
I'm one of those shoppers who is attracted to shops with slick web design, sculptural soap tops, and intricate swirls, but in the end a finely tuned formula wins me over. I like to try to identify the oils that give a soap the properties it has, and I want to say that the castor oil in this gives it its silky quality in use, but I'm sure it's more complicated.

Bodygoodies - Bar None
Love this formula too. I wasn't expecting this to wow me; it's unscented, how much fun is that? But Heidi is the hardest working soapmaker and it's paid off. She mentioned transitioning her entire line to be based on a single formula (the formula used in "crud", gotta love that name), which I'm hoping is the same formula as in this one already.

Maroma Men - Olibanum Citrus soap
This was a bonus in an order from mcfly85 on LiveJournal. It's a melt and pour from what I can tell, and it has a natural woody scent. I'm not familiar with this brand but I just used it and am pleased with it, it has nice lather and is moisturizing.

Tokyo Factory - Beauty Facial Soap with Argan Oil
I just got this one out for the drier, cooler weather. It's gotten a little harder from age/water loss, and I like it but would wait to buy this again when I'll use it right away.

Rainwater Botanicals - Nourishing Facial Soap with geranium and carrot seed oil
Despite the beneficial ingredients added I'm getting some dryness from the base used. This is a melt and pour soap that is alternately offered in an opaque and clear base, and my sample is in the clear base. I'm not sure if the opaque one had butters added or was only colored white but I preferred it.

And outside of the dish waiting for an opening is a 1/2 bar of Arcana Soot soap. I was too impatient to wait to use this - I like the color and it smells like bittersweet dark chocolate.

Bathtub dish:

Moonalisa - Rose Sywch of Virtu soap
The description for this scent is "Four ambers, Frankincense, Pinon Pitch, Copal and a touch of the sacred Damascus Rose." I mostly get the frank and incense; overall I would call this musky. This one has staying power and I like to follow it up with Moona's Mabon body powder, another frank and pine scent.

And finally, little remnants of Bodygoodies Low Tide and Tokyo Factory Caribbean Papaya.

So if you're still reading, what are you using right now??

Gin Martini (sea salt bar)
Fruit Slices - limes (main note), lemons and oranges
I thought this would be a fun way for a soap fan to try an etailer they might not have tried before. (In case you're curious what else I have, I have a link in the upper-right.)
They say you can't always get what you want. I never tried soap from Mad Hatter and it appears Balsam will be the same, but after browsing her blog she has other talents keeping her busy. (Update: I spoke too soon, I just got a convo back from the owner that she will return at some point.)
Do you have any summer bath routines? My clay and exfoliating soaps are getting the most use right now with the heat wave that arrived this week. How clay manages to be effective in soap when it only spends a short period of time on skin I don't know but my skin feels cleaner. Right now I’m using up the last of a bar of Lemonade Lounger from FuturePrimitive, Swashbuckler from Arcana, and Punisher and Low Tide from Bodygoodies, which has a sandy side for scrubbing feet. (I’ve never paid attention to my feet before but exfoliating with something wet and scrubby feels great! Savor makes a pumice foot scrub I recently picked up off a swap board and will be trying soon.)

My newest soaps are the beer soaps from Bodygoodies. There are five different soaps, which appear to be the same formula with different beers, additives (coffee, chocolate, buttermilk) and scents added. These are the first beer soaps I’ve used that smell like beer, or, actually, like hops. I love herbal scents and spend a lot of time sniffing these. For scent my favorite is the stout beer soap with oatmeal & valencia essential oil and it smells like the skin of an orange.

Next to the soaps is a vanilla lip balm from Mirasol Farm which smells really good too, like someone took vanilla extract and added just enough oil/butter to make it solid. Most of the bath and body products from Mirasol Farm are extremely highly scented. (For lemon fans their Lemon Chamomile soap is a standout for me. Here’s a little overview from Andrea Badgley formerly of Sacred Suds that describes Mirasol Farm in more detail.)

The other soap I’ve been impressed with lately is from My Planet Earth. Kinda like the lip balm I mentioned, the soap "Winter I Freaking Hate You!" below feels like a stick of butter transformed into soap. This soap is on the softer side and I love soft soaps. I was watching a video from Celine of "I Am Handmade" talk about these soaps and "Winter..." was her favorite. (Ha, another funny video with the soapmaker, Mike, talking about this one and using glitter for the first time.)

The other goodies above are Solstice Scents Dead Sea bath salts, in Crumbling Crypt. This was from the last year’s fall release but I just got it through the Solstice Scents forum swap page. This is strongly scented and complex -- Crumbling Crypt is an all natural blend of essential oils and absolutes including Virginia Cedarwood, Patchouli, Oakmoss Absolute, Spruce, Cypress, Amyris, Rosewood, Patchouli, Violet Leaf Absolute, Rosemary, Lavender, Vetiver, Marjoram and Himalayan Cedar. It smells very very dark, woodsy, earthy, dank, green and herbal. This scent reminds me of a very lush forest, like in a scene from the Lord of the Rings. Mmmm, this is a grounding scent.

And the last is one of the conditioners I rotate between, a solid conditioner from Get Lathered in Patchouli Lovers (an essential oil blend featuring patchouli, cardamom, fresh ginger, sandalwood, clove, and mandarin. I also like the Harmony scent: lavender, sweet orange, and patchouli with supporting notes of rosy ho wood, clove bud, black pepper, bright clary sage, and spicy cardamom, which combined smell like orange juice with a bit of spice.) I wasn’t sure if solid conditioners would have the oomph to handle my dry hair but I'm happy with these. Working it in can take time though, so I’ve started cutting slices and putting them in a jar with water so they become soft and feel more like a regular bottle conditioner.

Is there anything you like to use for the summer, or something new you've discovered that has become a favorite?Jeanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720810461114999061noreply@blogger.com7
